Final major project
Overview
My final year university Major Project was themed around vinyl records. More specifically how a setup for playing records functions.
The final piece consists of a triple gatefold, holding 3 discs. Each disc side correlated to a different core element of a vinyl setup.
The product is the standard size for vinyl gatefolds, meaning it can easily fit into a user's collection. The discs are 12 inches in diameter with the correct-sized hole in the centre to fit a record player spindle.
During this project I purchased a second hand record player and repaired it and set it up. This experience influenced me to educate other new vinyl users to understand how the setup and the format of music works.
Approach
The gatefold front cover displays the name of the project and a subheading along with vinyl related imagery. The back cover offers more in-depth and explains what each element does in detail. When the gatefold opens up, you are presented with a contents page which has a short introduction and a list of the contents: which disc has what element on it.
The outer area of the disc uses a zoetrope illusion, which spells out the title of the chosen element. This offers an immersive and creative way to display the titles.
The aesthetic is inspired by the nostalgic feeling people get when they think about vinyl.
The colour palette is based on the audio channel wires on a turntable cartridge.
