Design Studio Practice
Overview
Tokyo Design Studio was a university module where we were introduced to working to the requirements of a set brief within a professional studio environment. The module focused on developing a high level of organisational skills, reflecting those found within a professional context.
During this module we were lucky enough to work with John McFaul who is the Co-founder and ECD of McFaul & Day - a creative agency. The agency was responsible for producing design and advertisement work for New Balance, in particular their Tokyo Design Studio selection.
We were briefed to develop a flexible, digitally-native design language that can be leveraged over multiple seasons and platforms and highlight the unique product naming convention (RC-1).
Approach
My approach revolved around using Tokyo imagery to inform my final outcomes.
In particular the Shibuya crossing and the Kabukichō sign. These were implemented into my instagram carousel designs to advertise the RC-1 shoe.
Throughout the project I explored numerous ways to convey these ideas, with the final outcome being a combination of them.
Overall this project was a great experience as I got to simulate life in a design studio space, Receiving plenty of feedback on designs from a professional creative director. Having to meet short deadlines was a contrast to the typical layout of university modules and this helped build on my time management skills.
