Overview

For this university UX design module, I set out to create a digital experience that helps students build friendships and organise social activities more easily. Through research, I learned that although universities offer many opportunities to socialise, communication and planning are often scattered across multiple apps and platforms. This creates confusion when organising plans and frequently results in poor coordination or students being left out of pocket when payments are mishandled.

To solve this problem, I designed That's Long, a mobile app that centralises group bookings for sports, nights out, food, and study sessions. The app introduces a shared-payment system with an expiry timer, QR check-in verification for sessions, and streamlined discovery of events and activities. These features work together to reduce stress around planning while helping students form stronger social connections.

Approach

My design process was rooted in human-centred UX methods. I started by conducting semi-structured interviews to understand how students meet others and organise activities. The insights from this research informed empathy maps, journey maps and personas that reflected a range of student needs.

From this, I defined the core challenge: helping students plan group activities without confusion or financial risk. This guided the direction of the design.

I explored multiple concepts through ideation workshops and prioritisation techniques before selecting the solution that best addressed frustrations around organisation, communication and payments.

Low- and high-fidelity prototypes were then created and tested with students. Feedback led to improvements in navigation and the flow of the booking process, ensuring the app remained intuitive and clear to use.

The final outcome is a clean, user-friendly interface that encourages real social connection and supports students during their transition into university life, solving a genuine and validated problem.
